ΔΣΦ, ΓΔ Chapter, Alumni Weekend Summary – June 25-26-27, 2010
Five Delta Sig Alums helped clean and fix up the chapter house. Jim Wilson, Ed Maher, Phil Cummings, Ken Ahlstrom and Thomas James met in Pullman and enjoyed a weekend of work, laughter, comaraderie and fun.

The alumni and three students tackled a long list of clean up and improvement projects at the Chapter house in Pullman.

The project list was posted in the foyer, with different tasks checked off as they were completed.

Using a food grade sealer, all 8 dining room tables were rolled out into the fresh air, cleaned, sanded and multiple coats of sealer applied, with additional sanding in-between coats.

The leaky hose bib at the front of house, near the north end, was repaired. Phil Cummings also identified the water shut off valve, which was directly above the faucet handle, but was obscured by a hanging piece of tarpaper. The leak was fixed by replacing a piece of faucet extention pipe previously installed and by using teflon tape. In this same area, a brick mowing strip was added to define the lawn from the bark covered flower bed area. We also added an extra hose, extending the front yard sprinkler placement over the entire lawn and bed area without having to disconnect and move the hose. After mowing, the front lawn was fertilized and weed control applied.

The wooden fence by the north walkway was repaired, with the installation of a new, pressure-treated fence post. Existing fence boards were sorted through with enough recycled for use with the repaired section. Dimensions were taken for a gate, to be installed in August. It is also planned to possibly eliminate the dumpster by the street and replace it with garbage cans, stored inside the fenced area. The members asked for an area to be included which would also safely store the lawn mower, as there is no easy way to transport a mower from the back yard storage shed to the front lawn.

The north walkway was cleaned, brush removed and garbage taken to the dump. The chain between the last two monuments at the north end of the sideway was repaired. Plans for August inlcude repairing the brickwork on the monuments. Weed growth inhibitor was also applied to the bark areas.

The old stairs from the parking lot down to the Basketball court were taken down, leaving just the new stairs. This completes the tasks from last summer.

Jim Wilson led the painting effort, to give the foyer, landings and the entire stairwell new paint. Jim used colors selected based on how well they compliment the color of the foyer floor tiles. Along with the masking and drywall repairs prior to the first coat, there were many staples removed from both the walls and the hand rails.

The basement storage room was cleaned, drywall holes patched and a new 14 cubic foot, lockable chest freezer, courtesy of a Delta Sig alumni, was delivered, installed and began operations. The area around the new freezer was marked, to ensure sufficient air flow. The floor was mopped and the food items were separated from the non-food items. many non-food items were removed to the outside storage shed. In the photo, what appears to be an optical illusion is where the black tape on the floor meets the pink tape on the wall, which defines the new "keep free-no storage" area.

The ice machine in the dining room was removed, with the supply and drain lines capped. You can see the cap on the drain line in this picture. You can also see some of the water damage to the flooring. We also discovered water damage and mold in the basement, under this area. Drywall in two student rooms in the basement have been or will be torn down to the studs, plus we carted lots of wet drywall and wet insulation to the dump. Currently there are no students living in the basement, as the basement bathroom is next on the list for renovation. Work will continue in the basement in August.

Additional tasks completed during this weekend include
Dining room windows were caulked, sealing several leaks to the outside
A TP roll holder, an additional towel rack and a small cabinet were installed in the main floor bathroom
The main floor bathroom was scrubbed and cleaned
The old style in-and-out tag board by the main entry was removed
The prototype bunk bed was moved from the basement to the dining room
Parking lot weeds were dealt with and, hopefully, controlled.
Ken Ahlstrom and Ed Maher transported gently used kitchen cabinets from Kirkland to the dining room, for later installation in the kitchen
We provided a supply of CFL bulbs in foyer, stairwell and landing lights, plus for room as needed
The metal window grid was removed from the kitchen door, to be replaced with lexan in August
The three students used manual as well as mechanical means to cut down the jungle in the backyard
Parts of the two large trees in front were trimmed. More on this in August.
specifications were noted for many August projects, including replacing door ventilation grids, brick monuments and heat register covers.
You really should try to join us at one of these summer events. They are productive for the chapter house, help invigorate the alumni brotherhood, save some money for the frat, give you a sense of accomplishment, laugh til you ache during dinners and are worth the time and expense to get here...
