William was killed in the battle of Corinth, Mississippi, part of the battle at Shiloh.
it is believed William is buried at Shiloh, but I have not found any documentation.

The 1860 census shows the son of William and Mary as what appears as "simon" or a similar name.
The 1870 census clearly shows the name as Elmer.
according to his mothers newspaper obituary, Elmer left home a few weeks before his mothers death, and was not present for the funeral.
James D. Chamberlain, a local city official, was appointed guardian of Elmer, who was 17 at the time of Mary's death
